Pack Your Bags for a Trek in Sahyadris

Planning a trek in the Sahyadri Mountains?

The Sahyadris are beautiful but they can be tough too. The paths are steep and rocky. The sun can be harsh at times and the rain often arrives without warning. If you pack wisely, your walk in these hills will be far more comfortable and safe, especially if it is your first trek.

This guide is meant to keep things simple. Whether you are climbing a monsoon fort wrapped in mist or walking through the clear light of a winter morning it will help you carry only what you truly need. A light bag and the right essentials can make the day feel easy and joyful.

Here is a small list of things that will serve you well on a day hike in the Sahyadri Hills.

Descend from Kalavantin Durg with my backpack.
  • Lightweight backpack and avoid sling bags. For most Sahyadri day treks, a 20–30 liter daypack is ideal.
  • ID – Aadhar card/ voter ID
  • 1.5 litres of water – probably the heaviest thing in my bag ( 2 litres is recommended).
  • Mobile phone and power bank.
  • Torch.
  • Cap/hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Cotton Scarf
  • Lightweight jacket
  • Personal medicines ( if any )
  • Hand wash
  • Lip Balm
  • Hand cream
  • Sunscreen
  • Hair pins and an extra scrunchy
  • Extra pair of socks
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Optional – a lightweight extra pair of clothes to be worn after finishing the trek.
  • Food & Snacks – Granola bars, dry fruits, nuts, and chocolates.
  • First aid kit – Include essentials like band-aids, antiseptic cream, pain relievers, and any personal medication.
