Khadakwasla Dam by Bicycle: Scenic Views & Ice-Gola Cravings

After wrapping up work a little early, I didn’t feel like staying cooped up at home. So, I hopped on my bicycle to chase the golden hour glow and set off toward Khadakwasla. It was around 8.8 km from my place on one side. I didn’t take many breaks. Just kept pedaling with one thought in mind – I hope I make it before sunset.

And guess what? I did. I reached just in time to catch the sun dipping behind the dam. I parked my cycle, sat by the water, and took the deepest breath I had taken all week. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale..Slowly.. Peacefully..

Bicycle mode: ON

For a while, there was no noise no rush, just me, the sunset, and the calm.

There were stalls all around, the smell of vada pav, kanda bhajji, misal pav, and Maggi floating in the air. So many tempting options. I walked up to one of the stalls and asked for an ice-gola. The kind uncle smiled and said, Aap baithiye, hum lekar aate hain.
So sweet, right?

I sat down, watching the sun slowly dip behind the water at Khadakwasla Dam. Within minutes, he brought over my ice-gola.

And there I was…
Sipping, slurping, sadap sudup,
Watching the sky turn golden-pink,
Living my best simple moment.

Sometimes, happiness really is just a sunset and an ice gola ;).

Ice Gola and sunset at Khadakwasla dam

If you’re not from Pune, here are a few things you should know before visiting Khadakwasla Dam. It is located about 20 km from the city. It was built in 1879 on the Mutha River. This historic dam is more than just scenic, it plays a major role in supplying water to Pune and nearby areas.

Whether you’re heading for a sunset, a morning stroll, or just some hot bhajji and chai, it’s a spot that locals love visiting with their families.

Khadakwasla Dam
  • Monsoon – June to September – lush greenery and the dam at its fullest during this season.
  • Winter – November to February – The weather is pleasant, ideal for picnics and evening strolls.
  • Sunrise & Sunset – Early mornings and evenings. Also, the best time for photography.
  • No entry fee.
  • Ideal for picnics, photography, and leisurely walks.

On another day, I rode to the Khadakwasla backwaters with two school-going kids from my society! Vaibhav and Balraj 🙂 Sometimes, age doesn’t matter when your interests align!

Even though the dam wasn’t releasing water like it does during the monsoon, the experience was still so special. The golden morning glow, quiet roads, and cheerful company made it a ride to remember.

If you want to witness the dam overflowing, plan your visit during the monsoon months — June to September.

Definitely visiting again in the monsoons
