Bringing a baby into the world is a beautiful experience, but the postpartum period comes with its own set of challenges. Physical exhaustion, hormonal changes, and the need for deep nourishment and rest. In many Indian households, traditional remedies are passed down through generations to help new mothers heal and regain strength. I was introduced to one such comforting recipe by my mother-in-law, which I now want to share with you.
If you’re a new mom or planning your postpartum recovery, this drink is a wonderful addition to your daily routine.
What is Gudh ki Paath?
Paath (also known as “paath” or “pāt”) is a traditional North Indian drink or porridge-like mixture, made with ingredients known for their healing and strengthening properties. It’s especially popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan and is commonly given to new moms in the first few weeks after childbirth.
Ingredients
- 1 tsp gond (edible gum/dink), lightly crushed
- 1 tsp ghee (preferably desi cow ghee)
- Water (as needed)
- 1–2 tsp jaggery
- 1/4 tsp finely chopped almonds
- 1/4 tsp pumpkin seeds
- 1/4 tsp finely chopped cashews
- 1/4 tsp foxnuts (makhana)
- 1/4 tsp grated dry coconut
- A pinch of sonth (dry ginger) and ajwain powder
How to Make Paath Drink
- Roast the Gond
Heat the ghee in a small pan. Add gond and roast on a low flame until it puffs up like popcorn. Remove, let cool, and lightly crush it. - Roast the Foxnuts and dry fruits
In the same ghee, add the foxnuts and roast until golden brown and aromatic, stirring continuously to prevent burning. Similarly, roast the remaining dry fruits. - Add Spices
Add dry ginger (sonth) and ajwain powder to the mixture. Mix well. - Add water & jaggery
Pour in water. Stir quickly to avoid lumps. Add jaggery and continue stirring until it melts and blends smoothly. - Simmer and Serve
Let the mixture cook for 2–3 minutes. Pour into a cup, and serve warm.
When and How to Take It
Enjoy this Paath drink once a day, preferably in the morning or before bedtime. It’s especially beneficial during the first 40 days postpartum, but many moms continue it for a couple of months for continued strength and warmth.
