Kadha for Cold and Cough Relief

Kadha is an Indian traditional herbal concoction used in Ayurvedic medicine to alleviate symptoms of cold, cough, and other respiratory ailments. It is made by simmering a variety of herbs and spices in water to extract their medicinal properties. Kadha typically includes ingredients such as ginger, cloves, black peppercorns, cinnamon, turmeric, and jaggery or honey for sweetness.

My younger sister always makes kadha whenever I feel congestion in my throat. Sipping it brings so much relief. Today I made one for my husband. If you’re suffering from a cold and cough, I recommend trying it out—it really does help.

If the body allows, I also practice neck rotation, Ardha Matsyendrasana (Seated Spinal Twist), Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend), Balasana (Child’s Pose), and Savasana (Corpse Pose).

Guided meditation and chanting also has the added benefit of soothing my headaches. Our body needs rest and it is the most effective remedy for cold and cough.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1/2 tsp Clove
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Ginger
  • 1/4 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp Jaggery or Honey
  • Lemongrass/ Tulsi

Steps

  • In a small saucepan, add water and bring it to a boil.
  • Add the ginger, cloves, black peppercorns, cinnamon stick, lemongrass and turmeric powder to the boiling water.
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse.
  • Once the kadha is ready, remove it from the heat and add jaggery to taste. Stir well until the jaggery is completely dissolved.
  • Strain the kadha into a cup using a strainer to remove the spices.
  • Sip the kadha slowly while it’s still warm.

Prepare for yourself and loved ones 🙂 Get well soon 🙂 🙂
